Reference Notes

We have often heard the phrase "the truth shall make you free" but do you know what it really means?  Have you ever heard non-Christians say that religion just puts boundaries on your life or that religion just tells you that there are so many things you cannot do and the limits are so restrictive?

There are reasons that God tells us that certain things are not right or useful for our lives.  He is the creator who better to know than Him what is good for us.  Just as a parent tells their children not to do certain things because they could get hurt - God also tries to protect us by telling us that certain behaviors and actions are not good for us.

The Truth Will Make You Free ] So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, " If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
(John 8:31-32)

The freedom that Christ is talking about is the freedom from sin and it's undesirable result - death - and with this freedom comes a great joy that cannot be fully understood until you have it.

But don't be deceived - there will still be troubles in your life - we all have them - but the joy of knowing you will not be condemned by your sins when you die brings great joy

Spiritual priorities will also set you free of secular fears.

Often there are times when a non-Christian will experience a disheartening situation in their life like being diagnosed with cancer.  When something like this interrupts your life you may feel great fear of not knowing what to do or how you are going to get through it.

Know that there can be joy in these situations if you have put your faith in Christ.  Situations here in this life are temporary but Christ has provided for us in eternity and He is in control.  Be joyful that you have been counted as an heir with Christ in the kingdom to come.

The joy that a sinner receives when he accepts Christ is so great that it is also felt in heaven.

I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninetynine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
(Luke 15:7)
